Urinary Incontinence

The Public Health guidelines (AHCPR 1996) recommend for stress, urge, or mixed incontinence, behavioral or physical therapy should be the first treatment of choice.  Learn how to do exercise correctly and if your muscles are very weak, the therapist may also use:

  • Biofeedback:  The therapist places an electrode over the muscle and this "reads" the activity in your muscle.  You watch yourself doing the exercises on a TV screen. You learn how much to squeeze, how long to hold and equally important is to learn when to let go. You can "see" yourself improve over the next vew weeks.
  • Electrical Stimulation:  Gentle electrical stimulation over the muscles, helps the muscle to contract. You "feel" the muscles being pulled up by the machine. Stimulation may also help the bladder to be less irritable and lessen the feeling of "urgency."
  • Special Exercises:  The physical therapist will use several different ways to help the muscle work better. Core stabilization involving lower abdominal toning will be used in the program.
